Dave Bopp’s paintings are dedicated to nothing less than the fundamental questions of painting, which are posed – due to changing context -- anew each generation. However, Bopp, who was born in Basel in 1988, is less interested in unambiguous answers, and rather shows the spectrum of possibilities in his colorful and dazzling paintings: the fields of tension between control and chance, between analog and digital image production, between simultaneity and processuality in the reception of the work, between abstraction and non-objectivity, and between the two-dimensionality and illusionism of painting.
In a half-analog, half-digital process, Bopp layers up to twenty layers of color forms made of acrylic resin lacquer on aluminium-dibond board, which seem more like scarps of color and suggest an expressive-abstract gesture, only to reveal their purposeful contractedness at second glance. This process remains legible through the overlaps of the color forms. At the same time, the work presents itself as a colorful, luminous Gesamtkomposition that plays with illusionistic effects and figurative associations.
