The German-French artist, Edouard Baribeaud (*1984 in Versailles, lives in Berlin), stages myths, stories and pictorial traditions on the stage of art in his works on paper. For this end, Baribeaud develops a special visual language: the often exotic-looking patterns and ornaments of the staffages, interiors and clothes of his contemporary protagonists tell of places, times and traditions that can also be read as metaphors of free constructions of identity. Baribeaud’s inclusion of divers artisanal and decorative techniques is expression of his conception of art, which does not differentiate between fine and applied arts.
Everything we show in our exhibition is like this: the original illustrations of his (children’s) book »Die fabelhafte Geschichte des Riesen Théophile«[The fabulous story of the giant Théophile], which is currently being published by Hatje Cantz publication, are free works that teach us to marvel. Accompanying this, we present a series of works on paper created between 2009 and 2013, all of which deal directly or indirectly with childhood, fairy tales and children’s books. The vibrant and precisely executed ink and gouache works take us into mythological worlds and timeless dreamscapes that are reminiscent of the works of authors such as Hergé and Maurice Sendak, and in which one would like to linger –mesmerized by the dense patterns – for a long time.
