Galerie Friese was founded in Stuttgart in 2008, in direct succession to Galerie manus presse, which has existed since 1961. In spring 2015, the gallery moved to Berlin to a historic Gründerzeit building on Fasanenplatz, located in the old gallery district of West Berlin.
The gallery program spans an unusually wide range from classical modernism to contemporary art. The represented artists include art-historically significant positions such as Willi Baumeister, William N. Copley, Georg Karl Pfahler, Saul Steinberg, Karin Kneffel and Dieter Krieg. Our core competence in the field of post-war painting is also reflected in Klaus Gerrit Friese’s honorary functions as chairman of the Dieter Krieg Foundation, member of the board of trustees of the Willi Baumeister Foundation and chairman of the advisory board of the Walter Stöhrer Foundation. At the same time, we offer a platform to a young generation of artists such as Franziska Holstein, Michael Wutz and Claire de Santa Coloma.
Beyond that, we count heavily on our individually developed, distinct mediative program that solidifies the gallery as a truly vibrant place of cultural exchange. Our Orientation spanning multiple epochs as well as focusing on painting and drawings, offers multiple points of connection, which show and mediate historical developments, themes and techniques specific to these mediums. Within the framework of our extensive publication activities, public events and exhibitions, different generations and individual artistic handwritings are often brought into a dialogue (e.g., in exhibitions such as “Von Max bis Wutz. Gabriel von Max und Michael Wutz” or “Auf dem Weg zum Motiv. Zeitgenössische Künstler treffen auf Willi Baumeister”).
In extension of these questions onto interdisciplinary areas, we developed a non-commercial line of exhibitions. Two outstanding examples of this are the exhibitions of the philosopher of religion, Klaus Heinrich, and of the holder of the Nobel Prize in literature, Peter Handke, whose graphic works were each made publicly accessible for the first time in our gallery. Both exhibitions were accompanied by enormous crowds of visitors, received international media attention and were documented in a lasting way by publications initiated by us.
