As part of Gallery Weekend 2022 we open our first solo exhibition of the artist, Horst Antes (*1936).
In his exhibition 7 Häuser Antes shows seven monumental, partly multi-piece paintings, which depict the dark, reduced houses typical for Antes. The works, including newly created ones, can be seen for the first time in the synopsis curated by the artist himself.
Horst Antes, who took the horror of the Falklands War – that the West despite its experience of WWII saw itself capable of war – as an incentive to ban the figure from his works and has since dedicated his work to images of numbers and houses. The houses are dense, self-contained color surfaces that are most vividly placed in relation to one another. They elude hasty readability. They are tremendous signs of life itself that have become images.
Horst Antes is a famous painter and passionate collector. His collection of children’s books, of enamel milk pots, kimonos of Japanese workers, the art of Hopius, sculptures from Togo, Benin – in the collecting there takes place a form of parallel justice for the art and the work of all. This is hard to find, and it is a special form of attention. That he pays to every detail, his work and that of others.
Horst Antes studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe with HAP Grieshaber, where he himself held a professorship from 1984 to 2000. In 1966, Antes showed an extensive group of work at the 33. Venice Biennale. He partook in the documenta III (1964), documenta IV (1968) as well as the documenta VI (1977). At the moment his solo exhibitions Die Genese des Kopffüßlers at the Franz-Marc-Museum as well as Horst Antes. Radierungen at the Kunsthalle Bremen can be seen. Three house paintings are currently exhibited in the exhibition In die Weite – Aspekte jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland at the Kolumba in Cologne, in which annual exhibitions Antes works were presented several times. The great retrospective exhibition Antes. Malerei 1958–2010 was show in 2013 at the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin. Antes had further solo exhibitions, i.a. at the Forum Würth Chur (2019), Museum Gunzenhauser in Chemnitz (2017), or the Sprengel Museum in Hannover (2002). Horst Antes received the grand award of the São Paulo Biennale, as well as the stipend of the Villa Romana in Florence and the Villa Massimo in Rome.
