We are opening our second solo exhibition of artist Thomas Müller (*1959) as part of Gallery Weekend 2023.
In his exhibition Zeichnungen Thomas Müller shows partly large-format, partly DIN A4-sized works. With pencil, chalk, ballpoint pen and ink, but also with acrylic paint, oil and shellac ink, the artist draws on paper. Lines and surfaces come together in complex non-objective compositions and colors. All works were created in recent years.
Thomas Müller studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart from 1979-1988 and subsequently German Studies at the University of Stuttgart. Müller has exhibited internationally and his works are part of important collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Deutsche Bank Collection, Frankfurt, the Kustmuseen Stuttgart, Bonn, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf and the graphic collections in Munich and Berlin. The artist lives in Stuttgart.
Müller’s pictorial works are complex abstract arrangements of aesthetics. In a very contemporary way, sensual viewing arises for the beholders, a perception that moves the senses. His compositions are comprised of crystalline, woven, undulating, planar, taut and floating structures, sometimes delicate, ephemeral drawings. Often there are fundamental architectural references in form and color. He consistently works on the tension between line and surface on the one hand, and structure and depth on the other. Thereby, drawing is often combined with the painterly. Müller uses a variety of techniques and materials, occasionally within one painting. Recently he has been using a special shellac ink, which makes translucent, shiny and plastic effects possible. His work consists of a consistently evolving, progressive, the fractures embracing exploration of the medium of drawing.
